‘Allah’ is NOT the Name of God

I wrote a letter to the editor of 7Days a year or so go. I signed it UmmAli. I was disgusted by the responses directed at me; the evidence of sheer ignorance of basic local or Arabic terms, as most of the responses referred to me as Mr. Ali.

Granted, I’ve been here over a decade and I’ve probably a little more local interaction than the majority of expatriates here, but it didn’t take any of that for me to want to learn the basics.

For all your information, ‘Umm’ translates to Mother of, when prefixed to a name. Thus, making the name ‘UmmAli’ translate to ‘Mother of Ali’.

Considering this neglect most bitching foreigners have or had to learn the basics about local language, culture, traditions and even religion I thought I’d give you all a short-should-be-learnt-language course.

As mentioned above, ‘Umm’ means ‘mother’ or ‘mother of’; likewise fathers are given the term ‘abu’ or locally pronounced ‘bu’. UmmAli means mother of Ali. BuAli means father of Ali. Kindly remember this in the future.

Since I’m on about pretexts to names I might as well move on to what I’d guess is the most commonly misunderstood word, when it comes to Islam or the Arab world: Allah.

Allah is not the name of God. ‘Allah’ is the Muslim term for God, which can be broken down into two parts; ‘Al’ meaning ‘the’, and ‘Illah’ meaning God. The only difference between the English word for God & the Arabic one is the pretext: ‘The’.

This insures that Arabic word for God can not be used as a plural (Gods), or be given gender (Goddess), in the Arabic language, etc.

It simply amplifies that there is only ONE God. In the Quraan, Allah refers to Himself with multiple names which all reveal His qualities; i.e. the Controller (al-Badi), the Creator (al-Muqit), Knower of all hidden things (al-Batin).

I hope you’ve enjoyed your lesson for the day. I also hope that this might inspire you to continue expanding your UAE cultural understanding on your own.

You can find more basic Islamic terms in the English book A Basic Dictionary of Islam, by Ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood, ISBN 81-85063-30-3

Another thing, it is polite to call a woman 'Umm Ali' rather than addressing her by her own name.

Nice post....Go Umm Ali Go!!!!

I think I actually remember reading that letter by UmmAli..

By the way, there is a good course conducted by the Islamic Information Center (Al Wasl Road, opposite the Iranian Consulate) every Friday between Asr and Maghrib. If on one Friday it is for learning Arabic then the next Friday it is for learning to correctly read the Holy Quran.

The sessions can be attended by anyone who is interested, including non-Muslims. The best part is there is no fee to be paid :)

I wrote a letter replying to one about happy flash idiots, explaining that I’m a HAPPY FLASH IDIOT, but I’m not a bad driver, and flashing isn’t a fucking insult.

I believe what pissed most people off was that I said, it was commonly accepted as a way of letting the person in front of you know you were coming faster and because most drivers were considerate towards one another before the foreign invasion the slow guy would move without a fuss or feeling insulted.

The foreign invasion is the pissy part.

Wanderer that's great information! Thanks for sharing it. And Umm Sultan, exactly. Thank you for mentioning it, as I failed to do so.

Allah IS the Arabic name for God. In Arabic we see "Al-lah" as in THE god, in Egnlish they say God with a capital G as opposed to the lesser g gods the Arabic equivalents of "elah". Works for christianity and Islam, I don't get your point?

you have it all wrong actually. White people for some reason think that Allah is NOT the same as God, and they think that Allah is some pagan god that the muslims worship. So in English when they speak of Islam and God they always say Allah, but when they speak of jews or christians they say God.

lc,

Thanks for the thoughts. Please state your references as I did.. (The book written by an Islamic Scholar)

And did you mean 'white' people or 'English Speaking' people? Lot's of Lebanese are white but fluent in Arabic.

By the way... since this is just what I said... what is it I'm wrong about?

Another info place I like to watch is the Saudi Channel 2. All in english gives live relay from Makkah and Medina esp Juma prayers.
I discovered the channel one night last year in ramadan while I was in KSA. Learn a lot of stuff from there and get good input on websites that are legit and approved.

Hey... I would beg to differ a little on this one. I agree that the word "Allah" is a composition of "Al" and "Ilah" and that the two combined mean "The God". Not contesting that piece of information.

What I do disagree with is that it is not a name of God. It is in fact, the chosen name of God. If someone is named 'Hassan' and they are also beautiful, we cant say their name isn't hassan, or that its just a quality of that person.

All the other names of Allah are also qualities with 'the' attached... Al Malik, Al Quddus etc. They are also qualities, but are also names. Similarly, Al-Ilah is his 'quality' per se, but Allah is the name as well.

At least thats the way I look at it.

The west widely presumes “Allah” is a name that we Muslims have allotted to an entity of worship differing Him from the God that the Christians & Jews worship. The Jews have named God Yahweh and yet it is still widely understood that the Jews & Christians worship the same God. ‘(…)Because Judaism forbids pronouncing the name outside the Temple, the correct pronunciation of this name has been lost—the original Hebrew texts only included consonants. Some scholars conjecture that it was pronounced "Yahweh".’ - From Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_God_in_Judaism

I am simply trying to explain that it’s all the same.

There are 99 names for God, according to Islam including ‘Allah’, all of which (as Boo mentioned) are attributes as well. Islam doesn’t attribute human characteristics to Allah; thus each ‘name’ serves as a reminder of what He is which is beyond a title.

Is there a reason you are looking to debate this when really, we’re both arguing the same point? ‘Allah’ literally means, ‘The God’.

Guess I was slightly shocked by the title of your post at first. I still feel a little odd reading it (as it might not be THE name of God, but it certainly is there), but I realize what you mean. We are stating the same thing... just wanted to clarify... now I'm clear.

Eloi is Hebrew for "My Lord", rather close to the arabic word Elahi, also meaning "My Lord".
