THE UAE COMMUNITY BLOG: Better Example of the UAE Public than the Real Thing! Move Over Ruling Family, SD’s Coming!

This post has been reposted in UAE Community blog after Woke, seemingly took into consideration disapproving comments made by myself & Ahmed. Woke’s now added a nice little notice explaining his case:

I had removed this post earlier as per negative feedbacks from a few people (If 2 can be classied as few) whom I thought were active members and contributors of UAE Community. Good to know that atleast some people do have a sense of humour and awareness of issues in the UAE.

In which, there is a link with a wonderful word of approval from UAE’s Self-Appointed-Blogging-Queen:

Woke: I found the image very funny, and entirely appropriate for UAE community blog. It was a satirical take on a very real issue: the lack of proper accommodation for bachelors here.

(I managed to see it on Bloglines, which archives some stuff that's been deleted).

It greatly disturbs me that people (who may not even be members) are frightening UAE Community members into self-censoring funny and relevant material.

Should anyone ever post anything really inappropriate (eg sexual content, or "royal gossip") we would either fully delete it. For something borderline (eg an entry where a few words were a bit risky/obscene) we would unpublish it and ask them to amend it a bit. But none of this applies to your post.

I would be very happy if you could repost it there.

I’m going to have to tackle this issue in two parts. The first issue concerning the original post, which pretty much equates the UAE’s high-scale marketing campaigns for luxury residences & highly publicized accommodation problems for the common man (two completely separate issues), to the false advertisement of the trash bin that the UAE realtors really have to offer in general. And there’s a pretty picture of a trash bin, incase you want an actual visual of what the UAE realtors really have hidden behind the complete trickery, deceitful, immoral, should-probably-be-illegal, marketing veils they produce.

Not only did I miss any intended humor in this post (I’m assuming it’s that famous British comedy that only they seem to laugh at; like some sort of adolescent inside joke), but I also found the post disrespectful, insulting, misleading, and pretty-much pointless in nature.

Upon opening the comments, I found that Ahmed has similar sentiments to this. Now, let me inform you all that despite implications made by SD, Ahmed is not only a member of the UAE Community, he’s a UAE National. If you fail to see how a post of this nature can be insulting to a UAE National, there is surely something wrong with you; perhaps, it’s your moralistic western upbringing?

I myself am not a member of the UAE Community, but that’s only due to me requesting that I be removed for reasons pretty-much made clear in this incident as well as a few others I’ve seen in the past. I'm also not a national citizen, though I'll bet your ass I've been here longer than most of these bitching expatriates and I will be here long after they all pack up their shit and go back to the hole of a country they abandoned, in order to take advantage of at least ONE of the many things the UAE offers them that they can't get back home, because I happen to have a national son.

The administration of the UAE Community Blog is an anti-UAE, trash promoting, insult to the real UAE Community and society as a whole. And only those of like-mindedness and in absolute agreement to these trash opinions shall have any relevance or respect in the great world of UAE blogging.

I commented on Woke’s post, something along the lines that I agree with Ahmed; this type of post is better left in his personal blog and not the community one, based on the opinionated, insulting nature of it. I’m assuming, after which he deleted the same. I find it amusing that SD should consider sharing my opinion (and even Ahmed's combined with it) an attempt to scare other people from voicing there’s.

BOO! Woke, if I somehow managed to scare you, I apologize, but at the same time I feel obliged to inform you that you my friend are a pussy; in less vulgar words; a wimp, a sissy, a cry-baby.

Now, I would like to believe that the purpose of the UAE community blog is more than just trash talking the UAE, while pointing out how horrible this place is and promoting one hate blog after another and I’d like see it as a place for general information as given by real people, with real stories; say a mini reflection of all that the UAE has to offer, I really would. But that’s getting harder and harder to do.

You see, between my personal experience as linked above, the promotion of hate blogs and complete disregard for the opinions of UAE Nationals as shown here, the shameless biases regarding who should be allowed to cross-post their personal blogs with jokes or humor(?) & how often, in light of Woke’s latest post (one of many he’s posted that link back to his blog for no obvious purpose other than self-promotion) and the approval by SD in contradiction to this policy(?) she made just a short while back concerning frequency of such posts and the recent revamp of posting and commenting regulations as shown here, I’m beginning to think the UAE Community Queen should have in fact created her court of humble worshipers & followers someplace in China, sometime prior to the fall of the Great Wall, where she’d really get the fame and reputation she deserves.

But then, that’s just me. What do my opinions matter? I’m not an active member of the UAE Community, nor can I comment on any of the posts now, (if you're not a blog member neither can you; so all you interested tourists or just geographically curious from abroad, needn't attempt asking questions there). I should just shut the fuck* up, shouldn’t I?

*You all didn’t actually think I’d get through this complete rant, without using my favorite word at least once, did you?

HAIL SD & THE UAE COMMUNITY! A perfect reflection of the only REAL problem the UAE society faces that isn't in the process of rectification by government officials.

I find Balushi's ex girlfriend's blog - you know the girl before Black Feline, to be very interesting and fantastic and informative reading. I love the way (s)he eeks out other's opinions on various news stories and puts such a light-hearted spin on (eg) The caves in Abu Dhabi.

I think she'll have my babies.

Is this that satirical British humor that I just don’t seem to get? And if so, would you mind explaining to me in detail, what part I’m supposed to laugh at and why?

I just don’t understand. I really don’t.

well did any one notice the ad for 'bed space' on the trash can.

Thats what hes aiming at.

On one side you have these huge launch parties for sky scrapers and 'bed space' availibility on trash cans.

But I do agree that popularity based on regular blogger posts was biased.

And yes, the UAE Community Blog cannot be classified as 'THE' right stop for outsiders to build a perspective about UAE, but we cannot ignore the fact that it definately is ONE of the faces of Dubai.

There is one comment that I whole-heartedly agree with - the UAE Community Blog is more anti-UAE than anything else. And that's a damn shame.

I've noticed that the blogging scene has erupted over the past year, which is great. However, most newbies are on a mission to achieve blogging superstardom a la Secret Dubai Diary. They all seem to think that the best way to achieve this is through controversial comments, hence all the UAE-bashing. It's one negative sentiment after another, and honestly, I'm bored of it all.

What they fail to notice is that SD mixes in the good with the bad. But, since scandal sells, all the feel-good stories are overlooked.

Which is why I like your blog, tainted. You say it as it is, and write for yourself, and not what others want to hear.

It's a breath of fresh air, I tell ya!

'Wow. That was a really powerful response, I’m used to seeing a barrage of swear words erupt from your sand filled vagina whenever anyone questions you, maybe you have grown up!'

roflmao!

1) You admit to seeing enough of my blog to generalize my response techniques, thus admitting you find something about what I have to say attractive enough to keep coming back. I see nothing but a compliment in this!

2) I believe the first statement you made was not a question at all, but rather directions or advice; thus making your reference to 'questioning me and my normal response to that' quite possibly accurate. (Though, I would naturally beg to differ with you) I see the type of quality conversational/communicational/debate skills that I envy in this! Of course I'll be thankful, you've entertained me a little and perhaps even taught me some!

3) You'd think know me so intimately you can accurately describe for my public exactly what ails me and my vagina! Only that's impossible because the people I'm intimate with show class. I can only admire an anon who sees SO much of me and my body through a computer screen!

It's sincerely my pleasure to have you here.

Harsha, actually no. I didn't see this advertisement you're talking about. But my response would have been the same had I. The implication is a direct insult to the UAE and nothing more. And there's no guarantee that he himself didn't post that ad there, just for the sake of the shot.

Since you asked for an explanation,

The trash bin says "bed space available for small family only". The intention was to point out the lack of low-cost accomodation while multi-billion projects are being announced every often.

Ofcourse, you have every right to find it not amusing, disrespectful or whatsoever and give me some 'names' as well.

I think it is just a matter of differing opinions and it is rather unfortunate that you consider it worthy of a hate post.

Feline,

I wasn’t testing you! I was trying to educate myself.

Woke,

I didn’t ask for an explanation. And all I read through your comment here was, blah, blah, blah, I’m-an-SD-ass-kisser-and-I-know-she’s- on-my-side-so-I’ve-got-back-up, blah, blah.

Ahmed,

Perhaps you should have asked why these young men don’t go back to their country and avail of that free accommodation, rather than bitching about what they’re not getting for free here while insulting the people this country belongs to? And I don’t remember what I said to him, though it was something along the lines of agreeing with you and finding the post disgraceful, opinionated and better suited for his personal blog.

Great Indian Mutiny,

I’m an expatriate. If you don’t like it, LEAVE. There are no chains around your ankles, no collar around your neck, or glass cage around the UAE keeping us all in. Get the fuck out, so those of us who like it here can live without the depressing drabble of you all spit.

MD,

You’re surprised that a photograph of a rubbish bin, with an ad for bed space on it was posted on the UAE community blog (to an international audience), under which a highly satirical bit was written completely mocking the country as a whole, mixing two completely different aspects of this community, while implying that the UAE condones rubbish (literally) for homing anyone while leaving yet another NASTY image of life in the UAE to foreigners to enhance negative attention, has caused this reaction?

I’m surprised; no, let me make that shocked that you can be so incredibly blind to the rash implications that this is making, the total insult this makes towards the country you claim to love so very much. I’m disgusted that you find this sort of ‘humor’ acceptable, and at this moment, ashamed to know you as a friend. Perhaps I misjudged you, as I did so many others.

HL&H,

after everything u've said, here's what i have to add:

1. I’m surprised; no, let me make that shocked that you can be so incredibly blind to the rash implications that this is making, the total insult this makes towards the country you claim to love so very much.

this country is my home and of course i love it. but that does not mean that i'm going to follow blind patriotism. this is not about the country, it's about dubai and the negativity of the construction boom. if we can take praise so well, i'm sure we can take the negative realities with a pinch of salt. if anybody said anything that shows ignorance for this country, i'll be the first to tell them to stfu. but tainted, what's wrong in this? sooner or later, u are bound to see something like this. people's opinions vary and i saw where that post was coming from.

i still don't see anything wrong with it.

i'm not going to blindly defend the country where i know it has faltered. a crater is a crater. and this doesn't lessen my love for this place.

i have seen more offensive posts but people suddenly seem to take it in good humour. and this photo would have gone unnoticed, if it wasn't 'glorified' like this.

2. I’m disgusted that you find this sort of ‘humor’ acceptable, and at this moment, ashamed to know you as a friend. Perhaps I misjudged you, as I did so many others.

so i guess u're not the only one who is shocked. it's amazing how just disagreeing with u means im 'two-faced'? i loved how a7med and samawel handled the argument on their blog and if i remember, u did commend them on it. maybe u should return and reflect on that. i am still the same and i haven't changed overnight. if u think u've misjudged me, then maybe u never knew me.

one thing u should have known by now that when something is wrong...it just is wrong. just because i love the person or the country, doesn't make it alright for me to support them blindly.

3. Coming from you?! roflmao!

There's no perhaps, anymore. I'm pretty fucking sure about it now. I failed to see those multi-faces of yours before.

yes. coming from me; because my opinion is MINE...and the fact that SD supports it, doesn't make it 'wrong' and doesn't make me her follower. i refuse to be caught in these blogger politics. whether SD agrees or disagrees with woke...i dont care.

Hell's teeth. I hate doing this. I hate conflict and confrontation. But this post of yours has got me really angry.

Tainted, if any organisation was the target of that photo, it would be the property developers, many of whom do have decidedly dodgy standards. It was certainly not the UAE itself. If a society can't laugh at itself then really it needs a bit more therapy.

As for your problems with the UAE Community Blog...
The administration of the UAE Community Blog is an anti-UAE, trash promoting, insult to the real UAE Community and society as a whole.
I can't actually see any similarity between your statement and the reality. All UAE bloggers are welcome, irrespective of how crap their blogs are. There is maybe a spot of censorship but it's applied for the protection of the individuals and the blog itself to make sure they don't overstep the invisible line of the law. And what is the 'real UAE Community'? Is it a blogger? Or do you think the 'real UAE Community' only comprises UAE nationals?

Finally, why all these personal attacks on SD? I happen to think she did a great job in establishing the UAE Community Blog - nobody else was prepared to do it. I don't believe I've ever seen her write anything against you Tainted, so what's the problem? Why so angry?

6:59 PM, July 17, 2006
Blogger Tainted Female said...

Keefieboy,

I’m sorry this angered you. But I was mentioned in his repost (and unable to comment at all there), with a sly little remark about ‘not being in the community’ (as though that makes my opinion irrelevant) and ‘not having a sense of humor’; I do but I don’t think there is anything funny about this post at all. I do not believe that this post shows how UAE is ‘lacking’ accommodation as many defend, but rather implies that UAE offers garbage for accommodation. Wouldn’t an empty box make for a better image to show the void?

The UAE government is responsible for the developers, no? So it’s ok to insult the government so long as they don’t understand it? I disagree and believe if you’re going to do so, do it someplace less public, i.e. your own blog.

You can’t see the similarities to my statement about the UAE community? If you read the comments above or take a look at some of the places I linked in this post, you’ll see there are a few other people who can, along side me. The real UAE consists of a lot more than the one-sided negative rants I see this community continually show. Though I will admit, recently there have been some refreshing charitable posts in light of a number of tragedies; but these are not the norm at all there.

And I can only assume you’ve missed half my other interactions with SD; including earlier posts where I really showed anger towards her? I suppose you missed the rant where she brought a very sensitive family issue of mine into her blog and allowed people to make cruel and nasty jokes concerning it? I may be over these things, but I’m a little surprised that you bring these questions up now, and didn’t do so in earlier, far more ‘angered’ posts.

This time, in particular her sly little comments about ‘may or may not be community members’ & ‘scaring members’, only say to me that she’s on a bit of a power trip belittling people because they’re not members of ‘her’ community blog and encouraging (yet again) another offensive theme to take place there.

Anyway, I hope you’re not as angry now as you were when you commented. And I hope I’ve answered some of your questions for you. I respect you much and hope you don’t see this as ‘another of Tainted’s attacks’.

Cheers.

And (not that I want to drag this all up again), my really angry rant towards SD can be found here:

Here & Here, and this one coincidently, has a few comments that show the face of MD, that I knew both online and offline that contradicts with what she had to say here.

Harsha,

For the last time, there is no guarantee that Woke didn't post the ad on the bin himself, for starters. Something I've mentioned more than once. And whether he did or didn't, is irrelevant to my point. There is no argument you can make that will make me believe it's ok to post such degrading 'humor' about the UAE on the UAE community blog. How hard is it, for you to understand that this is my point & has been my point all along?

And frankly, I don't give a damn what you know, or think you know about that case. I know SD was made aware that this had to do with my family. I also know that she was requested to remove any insulting comments & the one linking to the article in the first place so as to prevent possible insults, which she refused to do.

And no, what I'm saying is exactly what I said. I’m pretty damn blunt, as I’m sure you know. It takes an idiot to believe what's written in the papers here. Did I say anything about commenting on them? I don’t think so. ‘Believing’ in something & ‘discussing’ something are two separate things, the last time I checked.

Clarify things for you? Or would you like to keep dragging this on?

Louis,

Stay wonderful, kay?

Not only did I miss any intended humor in this post (I’m assuming it’s that famous British comedy that only they seem to laugh at; like some sort of adolescent inside joke)

I thought it was funny, and I'm not British ;-)

but I also found the post disrespectful, insulting, misleading, and pretty-much pointless in nature

Much like many of your own posts, then, right?

The administration of the UAE Community Blog is an anti-UAE, trash promoting, insult to the real UAE Community and society as a whole. And only those of like-mindedness and in absolute agreement to these trash opinions shall have any relevance or respect in the great world of UAE blogging.

I don't know who the "administration of the UAE Community Blog" are, but I find the community blog a nice place to visit, full of mostly well thought-out posts, that pretty well reflect the views of most people I interact with personally, and that includes people from all over the world, including nationals. Any blog gets linked to, and any blog author gets to post, as far as I know. How more open can it get?

Granted it's heavily expat-oriented I guess, but I would love to see more nationals post and comment there.

Yes. But then my own posts are in my personal blog. Not one that represents the UAE community.

Selective reading anon? You'd have already seen my thoughts on this one, had you read through everything before you spoke.
