Emergency Rooms are for Emergencies NOT Financial Gain

By midday today, I couldn’t take the pain anymore. I finally got up the courage to put my fear aside and make my way to the hospital. The only problem was which one?

During my pregnancy four years ago, I was unlucky enough to find dissatisfaction in each and every one of Dubai’s hospitals both private and public, and ended up delivering my baby in Abu Dhabi, by choice.

After my pregnancy, there was numerous times that dissatisfaction showed its face again. The most prominent of times was when I was bitten by a spider, and could see the poison making its way up my arm along side the swelling hump on my inner-arm and decided American Hospital’s Emergency was the place to take myself. I clearly remember being ignored by emergency staff after admission, waiting for just under an hour while the doctor on call sweet-talked and reassured and reassured again, some new parents about their toddler who was suffering a common cold in the next room, before I flipped out, half delirious from the pain and probably the poison in my system and left screaming, refusing to pay any bills, and heading to a clinic where I allowed some other doctor to inject me with God-knows-what-probably-an-antihistamine, and offer me instructions on how to respond depending on further reaction from my body. This was long before the known ‘deadly spider outbreak’ in Dubai.

Today, had you been in Wellcare Hospital, you’d have witnessed such a scene. Again, I ended up screaming in a dissatisfied rage after being asked to wait patently for the doctor, who had been called to another ward on Emergency, and agreeing most patiently considering the excruciating pain I was in. No, it wasn’t this wait that set me off. It was the fact that after waiting for the bitch and finally getting to see her, she spent less than three minutes with me, most of the time attending to her cell phone (people calling her from different wards), or having the nurse attend to the ringing phone while her hands were busy attending to me. I was set off my MY need to insist she did a particular test, only for her to mumble at me the machine wasn’t working and thus was useless though she did it anyway before walking out. I was set off by her leaving, instructing the nurse to take blood, but not answering a single one of my questions. The nurse couldn’t answer a thing either, but suggested Panadol for the pain. When I shouted that I’d already eaten Brufen before coming – a much stronger pain medication and STILL hurt, of course she offered a shot. I didn’t want to hide the fucking pain, I wanted to know what was wrong! How hard is that to understand? The doctor had rushed out and the nurse was attempting to talk me into what would otherwise be useless tests unrelated to my increasing pain, while telling me that there was nothing they could do because the doctor didn’t know what was wrong.

How could the BITCH know what’s wrong? She hardly looked at or listened to me!

I’ve been here before. I know the damn procedures that needed to be done. I know that the tests I was being offered were no more than a two-fold, buy the bitch time and spend more money in the hospital.

I started shouting, as I called the hospital earlier and described my problem to make sure they’d have someone on call that could assist me. How can they possibly recommend I come, when the doctors are this busy? Isn’t this a private hospital? I mean the fucking place has valet parking. Maybe they should take some of the salary they offer drivers to park people’s cars and put it into hiring MORE doctors?!

I left the hospital, but not after making sure everyone in the Emergency ward knew what a joke this place was. I didn’t leave until I had assured the entire staff that people don’t walk into Emergency Rooms for fun, there most usually is a fucking problem and this is no way to deal with it. I didn’t leave until I made damn sure they knew I wasn’t paying.

And I haven’t found a hospital to help me yet. By the time this ordeal was over we decided to try a clinic. The clinic itself ended up being full, I was patient # 41. One doctor, a bunch of patients waiting, and they called # 21 twenty minutes after I sat down in the waiting room.

I was so stressed out, and in so much pain I left. I went home. I chewed on a few more Brufen tablets, and I finally passed out until now, until the pain crept into my dreams and woke me up again. Tomorrow, we attempt this again.

From my experience, pain is of no consequence in hospital’s here; even if you’re paying a lot of money to get a solution.

hmm.. had a couple of experiances with Welcare myself recently.. My Cuz is in my ICU of Welcare that we've been frequenting recently. They arent really very strict with ppl entering the ICU. Whats the whole point?

If ppl can come and go as they like..they might was well shift the patients to the wards.

During the World Cup.. my aunt fractured her leg.. When we went to see her.. She had this Nice cool awsome looking LCD TV stuck on the wall facing her bed with World Cup matches playing there but.. her blood pressure kept going up and down up and down.. and she was unable to regulate the room temperature.

After a while a nurse walks in with some machine that monitors blood pressure and sugar..for 45 mins she couldnt get it to start and it just kept hanging and making unbearable sounds to her visitors..i cant imagine what my aunt with already all the pain in her leg, must be going through.

I'm sure if you had visited the Emergency Room at Rashid Hospital you would have had the problem diagnosed and received treatment as well. All other hospitals here: American, Welcare are 5 star hotels with all their gizmos, which nobody knows how to operate, let alone treat an emergency.

beebee, again thank you.

Harsha, that sounds awful! I couldn't believe the state of the place when I was there. And I'd say get your cousin out of there and take her to Abu Dhabi if she's still under their care.

Symphony,

As I mentioned, I've had my fair share of horrible experiences with government hospitals here too. Rashid in particular is the hospital that diagnosed my breast cancer 11 years ago. The dr was rough, mean, and didn't think for a moment that he was dealing with a 14 year old girl and should maybe be sensitive about it all.

My best friend was taken there for depression - they tried to give her shocks. Luckily, her mother refused and rushed her out of there.

Most hospitals here are crap, to be honest with you. It's one of my biggest gripes about this city.

Huni, what can I say, these frikin hospitals make me MAD !! I swear by the Iranian Hospital and Dubai Hospital - not as pretty as the 5* ones but a hell of alot better at resolving the issues as hand.

Hope you are feeling better, take care of yourself

I don't know what to say to that except that I'm petrified about your predicament as well as your friend who was about to be given the shock treatment. Her Mom was wise enough not to allow that.

Mother friggin sons of bitches I would say.

What I wrote about Rashid was from my own personal experience or it could be that my Doctor is a God send for me. Trust me when I say what having good health means in these times, I've been there.

For what its worth, here's wishing you a speedy recovery and as a friend, I'm here should you need anything.

Take care & God Bless.

as for my cuz, hes not ina cndition to be moved.. but as soon as he is.. they're taking him to India.

and as for the Dubai hospital and Rashid Hospital. They do take matters at hand.. but what they do here is very backward.. medicine has gone a long way in comparison to the treatments they provide here.

Local hospitals dont keep up with it atall.

Very true about the hospitals, I'v had a lot of experience with hospitals in Pakistan, UAE and the United states, I'd say UAE hospitals are the worse amongst the ones I'v tried I would say Irani Hospital Dubai and GMC Ajman are a little better off than the others, but they too are crap. Hope you feel better and nexttime you go dont have to deal with the bitch doctor. Thats another problem, the hospitals have limited doctors and when you go again you see the same pathetic, looser doc sitting in the emergency room.

yea my mom too had some probs.. she was always weak for some reason..thought shed get herself checked..they diagnosed a 'G6PD deficiency' someting in the blood..

she was asked to avoid eating fava beans (no mroe filafil haha).

when she went to India and got herself checked.. they said she had no such deficiency..it was only due to stress and cuz she was anemic (which she already knew) and needed more vitamins!

Harsha and DR...

I have a question and I don't mean for it to sound racist at all. I had a Manager once from Goha India, she told me that the Indian & Pakistani doctors here are NOT at all good, as all the really good ones make killer money back home. It's only the ones that don't measure up that have to migrate elsewhere to make a living.

Would you both say this is true, from your expereince? Because to be honest with you, before she told me this I almost ALWAYS tried to seek out Asian doctors for whatever ailed me, because India (in particular) has a reputation for having great medical care there. I assumed the education and qualifications came with the immigrant doctors. But since she 'explained it' like this, I've been weary about that.

Would either of you know or care to give me your opinions about this?

Never had an experiance with doctors like that, maybe cuz I always needed to see a specialist kind of doctor and we have a family doctor who was always been there to guide us.

Besides that, for any ther problems, I've been to docs in Dubai..so..When I say Hospitals and Medical care in Dubai sux, it includes Indian Doctors here...big time.

I have no experience with indian doctor since they wont allow me in India but yes my understanding is that out of the Pakistani lot the best doctors migrate to the US because the money is good, the others good ones stay in Pakistan for whatever reason, they make good money as well as some are reluctant to leave. The ones here I'v dealt with are major pathetic. But I think that is because they come to the UAE as soon as they are finished studying without much practice and UAE is not a good playground. Pakistani doctors become good with practice in pakistan as there is a huge population that needs medical attention. My 2 cents.
